Clifton College, Clifton, Bristol

Clifton College is one of England's most famous public schools. Founded in the mid-Victorian era it has always enjoyed the reputation of being at the forefront of education in the UK. The school is superbly located in what has been described as 'the handsomest suburb in Europe' and now offers continuity of boarding and day education for boys and girls from 3 to 18. The Preparatory School and the College occupy adjacent sites and share facilities such as the chapel, theatre and sports grounds, and transfer between the two schools takes place at age 13.

Academic excellence, magnificent buildings, superb sporting and cultural facilities, a pioneering spirit and a high level of pastoral care in a humane and friendly atmosphere characterise the Clifton of the 1990s. Generous scholarships and bursaries are available for both specific and all-round talents. The structure, ethos and timetable are very much those of a boarding school, and the range of activities and opportunities reflects this.

Clifton aims to produce interesting and interested people who leave the school ready to take their place in society. Within 15 minutes' walk from the school campus is the centre of one of England's most civilised cities with its two universities, cinemas, museums and art galleries and such incomparable cultural benefits help to prepare Cliftonians for further education and beyond.

Of Clifton's 630 pupils 15% live overseas and the school can help with guardian arrangements if required. Entrants should have at least an intermediate level of English and specialist EFL tuition is available in The Coach House, which also caters for children with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia.

Bristol enjoys easy access to England's motorway network, Heathrow and Gatwick airports are served by direct coach links, and high speed trains reach London in 75 minutes.
