Bedstone College nestles amongst the South Shropshire slopes, in the very heart of Britain, and enjoys not only a stunning setting, but also a truly beautiful main building: Bedstone Court.

The remainder of the college- laboratories, boarding houses, classrooms, sports facilities, sixth form centre - has been built in the last twenty years. The college exudes confidence and a new classroom block has recently been opened at a cost of a quarter of a million pounds.

It is quite remarkable that a school of 200 young people should have a sixth form of almost 40 and offer seventeen subjects to GCSE and A level. Possibly even more remarkable is the high quality of results that are constantly achieved from a wide ability range. In June, 1994, almost 20% of sixth formers achieved 3 or more straight A grades in their A level examinations - going on to read Medicine at Cambridge University; Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, London University; Psychology at York and Political Science at Birmingham as a selection of the courses entered upon.

The College operates a whole school approach to the problems that dyslexia can cause, and there is a specialist learning support unit to provide additional support where necessary to those who need it.

At the beginning and end of each term the College runs coaches to and from Heathrow and Birmingham Airports which is of great benefit to parents living abroad. For those nearer to home, there are coaches to and from Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury stations. This means that there is always somebody at the airport, or station, who can look after the young people - either meeting them upon arrival or there to hand them over to a stewardess upon departure.

The greatest advantage of Bedstone is that it is a smaller school with everyone knowing everyone else very well indeed. That allows each person to be an individual with their needs catered for as individuals - whether those needs are academic, sporting, cultural or personal. The average class size is between fifteen and eighteen scholars and careful attention is certainly paid to the academic needs - as evidenced by the GCSE and A level results.

Outside the classroom the college offers over twenty different activities for its scholars ranging from clay pigeon shooting, horse-riding and fencing to philately and bridge. There is no doubt that sport, music and drama are the three key extra-curricular elements. The college enjoys an excellent reputation for all three: its sporting teams often enjoy County and Midland region success; the choir produced a cassette tape for Alpha Records, which is played regularly on local radio and on national radio; and the dramatic productions are always sell-outs.

The atmosphere of Bedstone is that of a large, friendly and purposeful family with the Headmaster as the father figure. That family atmosphere is helped in no small way by being fully co-educational (55% boys, 45% girls) and covering the age range of 7 to 18. Unlike so many schools these days it is a true boarding school with only 12% of the scholars being day and the remainder full boarders.

The preparatory department (for 7 - 11 year olds) is very much a part of the main college. Housed within Chacksfield House, it is only the lessons and two assemblies per week which are taken separately to the rest of the college.

Talking to the scholars gives one a clear feeling of the family ethos of the school. There is a great warmth amongst the young people and a strong loyalty to each other and their school.
